Pirates & Privateers: Explanation of Ratings

My rating system is subjective. I try to give an honest opinion based on my training as a librarian and years of doing research and visiting websites. The purpose of the rating system is to serve as a guide for users who seek additional information that is reputable and reliable.

I consider many qualities when I peruse a website, but seven are key in my evaluation.

How easy is the website to read?
How easy is the website to navigate and for visitors to locate the information they seek?
What content is provided and is it more than just a single web page of information?
Are there references and/or citations to let visitors know where the information comes from, and are these reputable sources?
Is it easy to find out whose website it is, and does the owner provide contact information?
How much advertising is there, is it appropriate, and does its placement interfere with the user's experience?
Is the website updated, or is it stagnant with broken links?

Once I complete my evaluation, I assign one of three ratings to the website.

= a website with useful information on a variety of pirate-related or maritime subjects. It meets at least half of the criteria used in evaluating the website.

= a website with quality information on a variety of pirate-related or maritime subjects. It is above average in meeting the evaluation criteria.

= a website that is a treasure trove of quality information on a variety of pirate-related or maritime subjects. In meeting the evaluation criteria, it rates outstanding.

I do not give lower than three Pirate Thumbs-up; if a website doesn't meet those requirements, it is not included within the recommended links. These ratings are not carved in stone. If the owner makes changes, I'm happy to revisit and reevaluate a website.
