Books for
Young Pirates
Charlotte Jane Battles Bedtime
By Myra Wolfe
Illustrated by Maria Monescillo
Harcourt Children’s Books, 2011, ISBN
978-0-15-206150-0, US $16.99
From the moment of her
birth, Charlotte Jane the Hearty has
formidable oomph. Her first words weren’t
“momma” or “dada”, but “en garde” – just
what every pirate needs to learn. She
swashbuckles, hunts for treasure, and has
bold adventures all day long, but when her
pirate parents suggest it’s time for bed,
Charlotte Jane disagrees. That’s
what landlubbers do. Then one day she
loses her formidable oomph and embarks on
a search to regain it.
This is a delightful story for young
pirates and will quickly become their
favorite book to have their pirate parents
read before bed. The language invites
participation, while the story teaches the
value of having a good night’s sleep. The
artwork is fabulous, capturing the essence
of piracy without incorporating its dark
side. And there are so many objects for
young pirates to find – for example a
one-eyed Teddy bear, a bed shaped like a
pirate ship – they will peruse the
illustrations again and again. (What makes
this book more special? This pirate is a
girl!)
